Inspired by Jay-Z and Kanye West’s song " Niggas in Paris", NEGUS juxtaposes hip-hop and the French literary movement known as Négritude popularized by Aimé Césaire and Léopold Sédar Senghor. By using the word “Negus” (an Amharic word used to describe Ethiopian royalty) Pecou recontextualizes popular notions of Black men in hip-hop while connecting modern and historic cultural movements which inform Black identity.
