"TALKING DRUM" considers the role of Black popular music and the social justice movements of the 1960s. The exhibit adds another layer of context to the museum's permanent collections. The work— which includes drawings, sculpture and sound installations—addresses the impact of popular culture alongside civic and political strategies. It also reveals the many ways culture (art, music, etc) becomes a powerful and multi-textual agent of change. Additionally, the exhibit provides a space to imagine how today's popular music and culture might inform the various and ongoing civil and social struggles.      (photographs by Maurice Evans)
