MUSIC AS A WEAPON is inspired by the music and activism of Fela Anikulapo Kuti but with a contemporary twist. The creator of  "Afrobeat" - a mix of jazz, funk and traditional music from West Africa. Fela Kuti played a major part in battling the corruption and destabilizing effects of colonialism in Nigeria's politics in the latter part of the 20th century. Through his music he waged war against a system of tyranny and left a vibrant legacy that continues to inspire. Pecou reproduces this spirit of Fela by championing ongoing Black political struggle in modern-day America.

The works look to the musician's poetry, activism and courage as inspiration in a new era where systems of oppression persist across the globe. They question what we can learn from those who have come before.
